Can you Combine Cycling and Ultra Training?

I am a 12-time Ironman finisher who wants to branch out into Ultra running. I am attempting my first 50K in November. I want to continue cycling 100 or so miles a week along with my slowly increasing run mileage. My last triathlon is in August so I will move to solely training for my 50K then. Is that possible?

Combining Ironman and Ultramarathom Training

Of course, you cam combine cycling and ultra running training. You´re well prepared to step up to the distance and will only need to reduce your cycling mileage a little touch.

After your race in summer try to recover/rest for 2 weeks, then integrate 4 runs into your weekly schedule. Try one easier run, 1 tempo or interval session and as a must-do 2 back-to-back long runs varying from 90-180 mins.

I´d recommend reducing your time on the bike down to 60-70 mi. per week. Start doing more core and strengthening exercises and train by the 3:1 ratio of 3 weeks of consecutive training increasing volume and intensity each week and recovering during the 4th week.
This should get you all the way to the finish line most definitely. Good luck!!!
